PRAIRIE POLLINATORS | HUMMINGBIRD CLEARWING MOTHS
About Hummingbird Clearwing Moths:
Half the size of a hummingbird, these moths are excellent pollinators and will nectar on native plants like wild bergamot, buttonbush, milkweed, and thistle. Interestingly, clearwing moths are active during the day while other moths only come out at night!
Clearwing moths get their name from the lack of scales on their wings creating a transparent appearance. Just like a real hummingbird, hummingbird moths continue to fly while maintaining a stationary position while drinking nectar with their tongue. They are fast fliers able to beat their wings up to 85 times per second (in comparison, a hummingbird beats its wings 60 to 80 beats per second during flight)!
